With the New Romantic movement of the eighties, the artists broke away from the popular music of the time and focused on individuality, emotion, and exotic thoughts and images. Many of the artists made reference to the nineteenth century by wearing the fashions (such as ruffled, lacy shirts) of the time. Because of the "romantic" nature of the movement, the artists were also allowed to dress in many other ways. The style was also known as "Blitz music" because much of it developed in The Blitz, a nightclub in London. The New Romantic scene included bands such as Ultravox, Visage, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and the Culture Club, and featured makeup and androgynous clothing.
