Explain spatial segregation and give an example.

What will be an ideal response?

Student examples will vary. A sample answer follows. Spatial segregation is the process whereby sounds that are coming from the same location are grouped together, whereas sounds that are coming from different locations are not grouped together. For example, a person can hear a radio playing music and the purring of a cat. By using spatial segregation, the person can group the sounds of the instruments playing music together, thereby identifying these sounds as coming from the next room. However, the purring sound is not grouped with the others. As a result, the person identifies this sound as coming from a nearby couch.
