Instead of having synapses between two nerve cells, why not just "wire" the two cells together somehow?

What will be an ideal response?

Synapses can be considered the "control" switches of the nervous system. Sometimes it is desired to have a nervous impulse keep traveling to the next neuron, but sometimes it is not. The only way to control how the impulses travel from one neuron to the next is to have them able to respond differently to several types of neurotransmitters.
