Discuss how Silurian and Devonian reefs differed from Cambrian reefs What will be an ideal response?
Cambrian reef structures were built around sessile archeocyathids, with sponges and inarticulate
brachiopods. These are all fairly simple organisms and their reefs were small and patchy. In
contrast, the Silurian and Devonian reefs were much more extensive and complex. They were
dominated by tabulate and rugose corals, assisted by stromatoporoids and algae, and had a welldeveloped
succession pattern.
