Describe the operation of the radiator cap on a non-pressurized reservoir system.

What will be an ideal response?

The radiator cap seals the top of the radiator and allows pressure to build in the cooling system to raise the boiling point of the coolant. As the coolant expands and builds pressure, the cap has a pressure valve and seal that are pushed from their seat allowing the excess coolant and pressure to vent off to the reservoir. As the engine and coolant cool, the cap allows the coolant that was pushed into the reservoir to be pulled back into the cooling system through a vacuum valve at the bottom of the cap.

Answer the following statement(s) true (T) or false (F)

A. For a pure component, a cubic equation of state has three molar volume roots. However, for a binary mixture, a cubic equation of state will have four molar volume roots, since the number of components has increased by one. B. If one models the vapor-phase of a mixture as an ideal solution, this means that the mixture fugacity coefficient of component i will be equal to the pure component fugacity of component i at the mixture temperature and pressure. C. The van der Waals one-fluid mixing rule requires that the mixture parameters are the same in both the liquid and vapor phases. D. In modeling vapor-liquid equilibrium using the gamma-phi approach, you can disregard the effect of Poynting correction factor. E. None of the above are true.

Follow the steps of the Systematic Approach of Section 14.4—that is, (1) identify the system, (2) determine whether the process is batch or rate, (3) construct a schematic diagram with inputs and outputs, (4) Label known material quantities or rates of flow and so on. A special mud formed by mixing dry clay and water is used to assist drilling through rock. The optimum amount of clay in the mud is determined from a chart that relates the percentage of clay to the hardness of the rock. If a supply of mud containing 38 percent clay and the rest is water that is available, how much of this mud and how much dry clay need to be mixed to produce one ton of a mix containing 48 percent clay?
