The Whigs used a Democratic derision of their candidate, William Henry Harrison, to their advantage by portraying him as a simple farmer who was born in a log cabin and enjoyed the same simple pleasures as common folk. By using the images of a log cabin and a barrel of hard cider wherever they could, writing campaign songs for their candidate, and attacking the Republican candidate as a dissipated aristocrat, the Whigs successfully caught the public's attention and mobilized the popular vote for Harrison.
