How does prematurity differ from low birthweight?
What will be an ideal response?
Students should recognize that a fetus may develop in utero and reach full term but may be a low birthweight baby because of biological risk conditions, such as maternal alcohol use. A significantly premature baby is likely to have low birthweight. Students might mention the average length of gestation (40 weeks), the length considered premature (37 weeks), and the weight at which a baby is low birthweight (less than 5½ pounds).
