How have the Chinese influenced cultural diversity in Southeast Asia historically as well as today?
What will be an ideal response?
East Asian cultural influences elsewhere in Southeast Asia are linked more directly to immigration from southern China. Although people have been moving to the region from China for hundreds of years, migration reached a peak in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At first, most migrants were single men. Many returned to China after accumulating money, but others married local women and established mixed communities. In the Philippines, the elite population today is often described as "Chinese Mestizo," being of mixed Chinese and Filipino descent. In the 19th century, Chinese women begin to migrate in large numbers, allowing the creation of ethnically distinct Chinese settlements. Urban areas through-out much of Southeast Asia still have large and cohesive Chinese communities. In Malaysia, the Chinese minority constitutes a little less than one -third of the population, whereas in the city-state of Singapore three-quarters of the people are of Chinese ancestry.
