Psychopaths are said to be impulsive and unemotional because their autonomic nervous systems (ANSs) are more difficult to condition due to low arousal thresholds, while their low levels of fear and anxiety also seem to be associated with a chemical imbalance between the behavioral activation system (BAS), which is very sensitive to dopamine, a neurotransmitter that facilitates goal-directed behavior, and the behavioral inhibition system (BIS), which is sensitive to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps us to manage risk. According to some biosocial theory, this tends to make psychopaths more determined to achieve their goals while less able to manage the risks associated with that, persisting in trying to get what they want even when the danger of punishment is high. Some such theories suggest that this behavior may be associated with a dysfunctional amygdala, a neurological component central to the limbic system of the brain, which is also reflected in low startle responses and a limited capacity for empathy.
