Discuss, in detail, the principles that policy experts have advanced for improving the juvenile justice system.

What will be an ideal response?

At a minimum, answers should identify and explain the four
principles for improving the juvenile justice system. First, the juvenile justice system
should base supervision, service, and resource-allocation on the results of validated risk
and needs assessment. Second, the system should adopt and effectively implement
programs and services demonstrated to reduce recidivism and improve other (related)
adolescent outcomes, and use data to evaluate system performance and direct system
improvement. Third, the system should employ a coordinated approach across service
systems (mental health, disability, and schools, for example) to address young people’s
needs. Fourth, the system should tailor system policies, programs, and supervision to
reflect the distinct developmental needs of adolescents. Superior answers will have
explained these principles in detail and discussed the subcomponents of the principles
included in the text of the chapter. Examples will vary across students.
