To reduce the weight of an automobile it is decided to redesign the arm that controls the steering of the front wheels. The present control arm is made of oil quenched and tempered 1040 steel, and the maximum design force creates a stress that is 50 percent of the metal yield stress. It proposed to change to a low alloy steel of higher strength, and the new design is to be 50 percent of the yield stress. It is also determined that the new steel must have at least 15 percent ductility to provide sufficient resistance to fracture. The present control arm is 1.0 cm. in radius and 30 cm. long. The maximum tensile force expected on the control arm is 7.85 × 104 N. Of the low alloy steels presented in this chapter, what steel that meets the design requirements and provides the greatest weight
reduction.
(a) What is the new arm radius?
(b) What weight reduction is provided by this new steel?
