Typical antipsychotic medications were largely developed before atypical antipsychotic medications. In general, antipsychotic medications were used to reduce the instance of positive symptoms of schizophrenia by their antagonistic actions against the dopamine receptors, resulting in less dopamine being registered and affecting the system. However, these drugs reduce dopamine in general, which results in side effects. Atypical antipsychotic medications, instead, selectively impact the prefrontal cortex as an agonist but impact the mesolimbic system as an antagonist.
