Are there ways to alter polygraph results? Are these techniques successful? What are some of the problems associated with polygraph tests?
What will be an ideal response?
* There are a number of countermeasures designed to alter polygraph results including: drugs, physical methods (e.g., biting the tongue), and mental methods (e.g., counting backwards from 100 by 7s).
* Studies have shown half the guilty individuals were able to "defeat" the polygraph test using countermeasures.
* The problem with polygraphs is that the physiological changes thought to reveal deception may result from anxiety, anger, or fear.
* The most common mistake in using a polygraph is identifying an innocent person as not telling the truth, termed a false positive.
