What steps might you take to set up a portfolio system?
What will be an ideal response?
Steps that might be taken to set up a portfolio system include the following:
• Establish goals.
• Decide on indicator tasks. Indicators are tasks, such as compiling lists of books read, that provide evidence that a goal is being met.
• Establish what counts as adequate performance. For some goals, rubrics might be used.
• Mange portfolios. Decide what kinds of and how many indicators will be included. Which writing samples will be included, for instance? Students may be asked to explain in writing why they chose the indicators they have included in their portfolios and how these indicator indicate that they have met their goals.
• Evaluate portfolios. The portfolio is evaluated in terms of its goals. Usually evaluation takes place in a conference with the students.
