Describe clients with whom you have worked or are otherwise familiar. Consider how the clients’ presenting problems were represented in the five domains of functional assessment.
What will be an ideal response?
One example of this process involves the problem of spousal abuse. A functional domain assessment may indicate that the behavior is predicated by:
• Social cues – The abuser spends time with other aggressive men
• Environmental cues – The apartment may not be clean, or dinner may be late. More generally, the man may associate his home setting with past feelings of frustration.
• Emotional cues – The man may be experiencing job stress, feel unappreciated by his family, or be reacting to some disappointment
• Cognitive cues – The man may tell himself that he is a general failure and needs to act more “in control” of his life
• Physical cues – The man may be tired at the end of a long day, or anxious about an upcoming event that will be difficult for him.
