The various ways in which one can prevent or at least reduce one's chances of contracting STIs are as follows:
(1) Using a latex condom, in addition to being a contraceptive, gives good protection against HIV, HPV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, syphilis, and other STIs.
(2) Washing the genitals before intercourse helps remove bacteria.
(3) Inspecting one's partner's genitals for a chancre, a discharge, herpes, a wart, or a blister is a healthy exercise before intercourse.
(4) Urinating before and after intercourse helps to keep bacteria out of the urethra.
(5) Finally, each person is ethically responsible to seek out early diagnosis and treatment.
