Discuss the concept of bullying. What are the major types of bullying? What are the means by which adolescents and children are bullied? How common is bullying? Who is most likely to be bullied? What are the harmful effects of bullying?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers should, at a minimum, address the following. There are three major forms of bullying:
physical, social, and verbal. Bullying behaviors take many forms. For example, bullying might take the
form of any of the following: insults, name-calling, threats, being subjected to rumors, physical assaults,
coercion, social isolation and exclusion from activities, and property damage. Cyberbullying also has
multiple forms. While it has recently decreased, bullying is still a common occurrence, with many
victimizations occurring on school grounds. Almost one third of all students report being bullied during the
school year. Girls are more likely than boys to be bullied (23% v. 19%). Younger students are more likely
to be bullied compared to older students. Marginalized students, such as LGBT students, are at
significantly greater risk of being bullied. Students who are bullied do not perform as well in school and
more often skip class and are truant. They are also at significantly higher risk for using and abusing
alcohol and drugs, suffer from depression, and have a higher risk of suicide.
