What is the role of the azygous and its tributaries in returning blood to the vena cava?
What will be an ideal response?
The azygous is the smallest tributary of the superior vena cava. The other two vessels that are tributaries of the superior vena cava are the brachiocephalic veins. The azygous drains blood and ascends from the lumbar region over the right side of the vertebral column to enter the thoracic cavity through the diaphragm. On the left side, the azygous vein receives blood from the hemiazygos vein. Together, these veins receive blood from the intercostal veins, the esophageal veins, and other veins from the mediastinal structures.
