Discuss three ways you can determine whether a website's content is appropriate for a college research paper.

What will be an ideal response?

One way to determine the appropriateness of web material is to examine the educational and professional credentials of the author. Is the author an authority? Does he or she have sufficient training and/or experience to be commenting on this topic? A second criterion is the website's apparent purpose or intended audience. Is this an information site or a commercial one? In determining the purpose, you should also examine whether the site is appropriately academic. Is the information specific? Is it intended for a specialized audience-or a more general one? A third consideration is the currency of the information. Has the site been maintained? Or is the information dated? A fourth consideration is the accuracy of the information on the site. A fifth and final consideration would be the presence of bias on the site. Is the information accurate? Is it free of bias? Is the author intending to make a profit from the site? All are important criteria and questions.

Participants in an experiment were asked to keep track of the most recent word they had heard that started with a "G." Therefore, participants should report "gravy" after hearing the sequence "girl, grump, hat, scissors, whistle, pen, radio, bed, foot, glass, lantern, gravy." Later, participants are asked to report back all the "G " words they heard. Then we would expect

a. good recollection of all the words because participants were able to concentrate their attention on the task and rehearsed only one word at a time. b. poor recollection of all the "G " words because the situation invites maintenance rather than elaborative rehearsal. c. good recollection of "grump," since this word was in the participants' thoughts for a long time (while they were waiting for "glass"). d. poor recollection of the early words in the list but good recollection of the words in the middle of the list.
