Discuss the concept of isostasy. Provide evidence that it occurs and examples of its effects. What will be an ideal response?
Isostasy is the concept that lithospheric blocks “float” on the plastic, denser asthenosphere. This
can be seen by ice cubes floating in water or by the effects of icebergs in the ocean. Glaciers
depress the continental crust because they exert increased weight on the lithosphere. After they
melt, the lithosphere slowly returns to normal, rising in elevation. This can be seen adjacent to
shores in places like Scandinavia.
