Explain three key areas that teachers should consider when creating a spelling program and outline two strategies that may be incorporated in the program
What will be an ideal response?
Considerations for an effective spelling program include:
• focus initial instruction on spelling high-frequency words;
• focus on misspelled words from student’s writing and teach students error-correction procedures for individual words;
• link instruction in spelling and reading, having students learn to spell words that they are in the process of learning to read;
• teach word patterns by focusing on meaning units (morphemes: prefixes, suffixes, root words);
• teach strategies that are based on a systematic word study procedure;
• promote accuracy, maintenance and generalization;
• use reinforcement to ensure motivation.
Teaching strategies that may be employed include:
• the Fernald multisensory approach—a word-study technique. It is a systematic, multisensory instructional approach that incorporates use of the visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile (VAKT) modalities simultaneously.
• The 5C's—(i) copy each spelling word while saying each letter, (ii) cover each word and then write the word from memory, (iii) compare each word as written to its actual spelling, (iv) correct any misspellings for each word that is not spelled correctly, (v) continue the process until all words are spelled correctly.
