ANSWER: They should examine how factory work changed the traditional idea of family as a production unit. The new manufacturing system broke up families and shunted people into more fixed roles. The students can look at how children lived in working-class households, as well as in wealthier families. For women, the new economy meant new opportunities but also new limitations. While women had more employment choices, they no longer worked side-by-side with their husbands and were expected to conform to new social expectations. But it is also worth noting that many women turned their new free time to social causes and did not confine themselves strictly to the home.
