Explain what the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis is and give an example not found in the textbook to
illustrate it.
What will be an ideal response?
The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis asserts that people?s thoughts are strongly influenced by
language. If a word does not exist for a particular idea in that culture then a person has
no way to conceptualize that idea. For example, if the word ?dating? does not exist in a
particular culture then individuals in that culture would not be likely to ?date? before
marriage. Therefore, arranged marriages in that particular culture would seem much
more acceptable.
