What is the procedure for testing a circuit with a voltmeter if the polarity is unknown?

What will be an ideal response?

If the polarity of the circuit or component is unknown, touch the leads to the terminals while observing the indicating needle. If the indicating needle attempts to move backward, the meter lead connections must be reversed. If the leads are not reversed, damage to the meter, particularly the needle, can occur.
