U.S. consumption greatly increased at the end of the twentieth century, but since the recession, there are some indications that we may be entering a postconsumption age. What would a postconsumption age mean for our society? Provide an example of how you would be personally affected by the postconsumption age.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary but should discuss that while excessive consumption and the related high level of debt were key factors in causing the Great Recession, a postconsumption age would bring with it problems of its own, including fewer jobs and a declining standard of living. This may affect students as fewer jobs could lead to unemployment. Unemployment coupled with student debt may lead to loss of agency, homelessness, and so on.
