Understanding the goals of the interview from the perspective of the firm and the connector, along with being well prepared and rehearsed, are critical factors in interviewing success. Regardless of preparation, however, the actual interview is usually the most nerve-wracking for the marketer and the interviewee. Here are some tips for an MPR professional to give the interviewee before the event. First, relax because you are well prepared. Remember, physical appearance matters, so dress in line with your message, positioning, and the style of the medium. Also, body language says as much as your words, so don't be so rigid that you come across as robotic, but don't be so casual that you seem sloppy or disinterested. Connect with your interviewer by trying to hit it off. Stay on message by not letting the journalist steer you off course. Use bridging to stay on point by answering questions that get off topic by saying something like, "That's a great question, but what you really need to focus on is . . ." Use language to accentuate your main points. Use verbal signposts such as "this is important," or "a critical thing to remember is." Casual, conversational confidence is the mark of an expert. Make sure that your prepared answers do not seem prepared.
Use short, sweet, and simple speech and leave the tech talk and jargon at the office. Simple answers play better. Be enthusiastic because journalists don't want a boring interview. Stay positive. Don't say, "No comment." However, if you don't actually know the answer, say so and offer to get back to the journalist after doing some research or suggest an alternate source.
