Gemma is a social worker with the Piedmont City Health Department. She is primarily responsible for providing counseling for HIV+ clients, as well as case management for those receiving longer-term care. Her agency is in the process of expanding services and will be hiring a new social worker. Gemma’s supervisor has asked her to review the job applications as they arrive.
Gemma notices an application from Zena, a colleague currently working at another agency in the community. Gemma has known Zena for many years and is very familiar with her skills and background. She is therefore surprised to see that Zena's application boasts two thousand hours of clinical work with clients, one of the requirements for this new position. Gemma knows that this is not the case, as none of Zena’s positions since graduation has involved this type of clinical work. Moreover, a review of her résumé does not show any evidence of this experience. Gemma is troubled and must decide how to proceed.
