The Queens families saw the world as dangerous and tended to try to toughen up their children. Thy avoided praise and encouragement and discouraged emotional expression. They used teasing criticizing and disciplining and chose not to spoil or overindulge their children. The Manhattan families viewed the world as a safe and welcoming place. They worried about damaging self-esteem, hurting creativity and blocking self-expression.
