The total fertility rate among Italian women in 2010 was 1.4, whereas it was nearly 4.5 for women in the African country of Ivory Coast. What do these numbers mean? How are they likely to relate to the actual number of children per woman in each country
and why? How are they likely to change in the future?
What will be an ideal response?
Total fertility rate refers to the hypothetical number of children that a woman would have if she survived her entire reproductive lifetime. In Italy, the TFR is very close to the actual average because medical care is good and most women survive through menopause (their reproductive lifetime). In Ivory Coast, the TFR is probably greater than the actual average for women because mortality among women is high during their reproductive lifetime. TFR will likely decrease in both countries in the future, especially in developing countries where women's education and opportunities are increasing.
