The choice of a door depends on the volume of traffic, security requirements, and desired appearance. In residential buildings, interior doors provide privacy and sound control while exterior doors provide security, protection from the weather, and an important part of the exterior appearance. In commercial buildings, doors must permit ingress and egress as required by building codes. They are subject to considerable use and must be durable, with hardware able to withstand continued operation.
