The stress response begins with acknowledgement of a stressor that begins activation of the hormonal and nervous pathways. The result is increased breathing rate, heart rate, blood pressure, use of muscle strength, and general body metabolism. The skin may appear flushed, the individual more alert, and the body more animated.
