Provide an overview of strategies that can support planning in the early childhood classroom

What will be an ideal response?

Planning should be a regular part of the day, and children need to see different areas of the room when they are planning to support the generation of different possibilities. When planning, children should be asked questions to help them identify objectives and how they might pursue their individual objectives. Teachers need to listen attentively to children's plans with the goal of understanding their objectives and supporting their ability to consider alternatives. Teachers also need to support, accept, and extend all the ways children express their plans by valuing each child's unique ways of presenting and engaging with information and providing opportunities for connections and integration. All children need opportunities to elaborate on their plans, and the plans children develop need to be written down.
