Describe contact ceilings in general.

What will be an ideal response?

?Ceilings made from gypsum board and other material panels can be fastened directly to the roof or floor deck above. The panels may be installed directly to certain structural materials like wood, or be fastened to intermediate furring strips where direct installation may be difficult. A furring strip is a narrow piece of wood or metal fixed to a wall, floor, or ceiling to provide a surface for the fixing of plasterboard. In wood-frame construction, gypsum wallboard panels are screwed directly to the joists, as shown in Chapter 20. Plaster ceilings can have the metal lath secured directly to steel, wood, or concrete structural systems. The drywall is sanded and finished as outlined in the previous topic, and painted to create the desired appearance. Drywall ceilings create a smooth clean finish that can be easily updated with new paint as needed. Drywall is heavy however, and may require the use of a more closely spaced structural grid or thicker panel sizes.
