For example, employers place value on accurate spelling on job applications. The student's own interests and various areas of study provide new words. Vocational words also can be emphasized. At the secondary level it may be best to teach spelling in conjunction with other activities rather than to use class time solely for spelling instruction. Practice in reading and other learning activities can help the adolescent learn to spell. Success in spelling increases in importance with the finding that students' beliefs about their efficacy as spellers may affect not only their spelling performance but their writing performance as well (Rankin, Bruning, Timme, & Katkanant, 1993). Finally, strategies to compensate for poor spelling should be taught to students whose spelling problems may affect their grades in content areas.
