Describe each of the four categories of stress symptoms for police officers. How do critical incidents factor in the stress equation?

What would be an ideal response?

The four categories of stress symptoms for police officers are organizational and administrative practices, the criminal justice system, the public, and the stressors intrinsic to police work.

Organizational and administrative practices is a two-way street. Lower-ranking police officials must respond to changes and mandates imposed from above. This becomes problematic when there is tension between superiors and subordinates. Criticism, rejection, or derogation by officer’s sergeants’ unwillingness to support officers in “official trouble” is extremely stressful.

The criminal justice system the court system and related rulings and giving testimony can also cause stress. The corrections system also causes stress, as it seems sometimes that criminals are back on the street before the police report is done.

The public officers tend to believe that the public disapproves of them and what they are doing. This perceived stress may be exacerbated by the media’s tendency to portray the police in a negative light.

The stressors intrinsic to police work Police officers are required to make decisions that may result in serious negative consequences for the lives and property of others. The tasks of a police officer cause significant stress as well as the environment (shift work, boredom, performing non-police duties, etc.).
