The United States is a nation of immigrants, and currently takes in 20% of the world's migrants yearly. The issue of immigration, especially illegal immigration, is controversial among citizens and business people. What are the arguments for and against immigration? Are these arguments valid? Why or why not?
Many American citizens fear that an unstoppable tide of poor immigrants will take their jobs and bleed social and other services. The business community argues that the low-wage immigrants who are undocumented workers are vital for the American economy, generally taking jobs shunned by most Americans while also contributing to the economy through their purchases. Although they burden schools and other social services, most undocumented workers also pay federal taxes (a price they pay for using falsified Social Security and taxpayer ID cards) but are ineligible to draw Social Security.
About 5 percent of the US workforce is classified as illegal, but contrary to stereotypes, most earn at least minimum wage, and many work outside agriculture, construction, and other labor-intensive industries. One-third own their own homes, and two-thirds are proficient in English.
