What are the elements of a Reading Recovery lesson?

What will be an ideal response?

• Reading of familiar books: Student reads one or more previously read books. This provides added practice.
• Rereading of previous day's book and taking a running record: Yields information about the kinds of strategies the student is using and may also reveal a need for reteaching or reviewing a strategy.
• Working with letters and/or words: While reviewing the student's rereading, or whenever appropriate, the teacher and student can build words together using magnetic letters and a metal board.
• Writing a story: A one- or two-sentence story is dictated to the teacher. Using Elkonin boxes and the teacher's help, the student writes the story, which the teacher dictates back to him or her.
• Assembling a cut-up story: The story written on cardboard or tag board is cut up by the teacher and then reassembled by the student. The cut-up sentence(s) are placed in an envelope so the student can practice reading the story at home.
• Reading a new book: The teacher prepares the child for the reading of the book by walking her or him through the book page by page. The student then reads the book.
