What role did women play in middle class society?
What will be an ideal response?
Women in middle classes were expected to "earn money, not spend it." The primary duty of a woman was to be married and run her household under the auspices of "separate spheres," that delineated her area of service from her husband's. In the petit bourgeoisie, women were found in suitable occupations such as a teacher, seamstress, governess, or being the maid to a genteel lady. Occupations were, however, a dangerous semi-step above being poor and losing social status. A married middle class woman in a household had no legal rights per se, but she was under the feme covert status, covered under their fathers or husbands. Charitable activities, such as those in temperance movements, were seen as acceptable outlets for women, but middle class women's options were otherwise limited. For example, both Brontë sisters wrote under male pseudonyms, George Eliot and George Sand, in order to have their works taken seriously.
