Discuss the incidence of child sexual abuse. What are some of the factors that might explain why most of the perpetrators were men and not women?

What will be an ideal response?

According to a meta-analysis of data across 22 countries, 22 percent of women and 8 percent of men had suffered some form of sexual abuse prior to age 18. Many cases are never reported, but it seems clear that child sexual abuse is not rare and that girls, more often than boys, are the victims.

The great majority of perpetrators of child sexual abuse are men. According to the National Health and Social Life Survey (NHSLS), for girls almost all the cases involved sexual contact with men; for boys, some cases involved men and some women, although cases involving men were considerably more common. A number of factors probably account for this. Men in our culture are socialized more toward seeing sexuality as focused on sexual acts rather than as part of an emotional relationship. The sexual script for men involves partners who are smaller and younger than themselves, whereas women's sexual script involves partners who are larger and older than they are.
