Under his rule, the republics had been forced to keep their nationalist feelings in check. His aim was to eliminate old ethnic divisions and create a united social revolution. When he died in 1980, the old nationalist desires of the various republics were reborn. Up to this time Serbs, Croats, and Muslims had lived side by side in a form of peaceful coexistence.
