What is a behavioral theory of leadership? Choose one of the behavioral leadership theories and explain it. Then, choose a leader and characterize the leadership style you think that person exhibits according to your chosen theory.

What will be an ideal response?

A behavioral theory of leadership is one that attempts to determine distinctive styles used by effective leaders. The two classic studies discussed in the text are:

The University of Michigan Model: This investigation identified two forms of leadership styles: job-centered and employee-centered. In job-centered behavior, managers paid more attention to the job and work procedures. In employee-centered behavior, managers paid more attention to employee satisfaction and making work groups cohesive.

Ohio State Leadership Model: The two major dimensions of leader behavior are initiating structure—the leadership behavior that organizes and defines what group members should be doing; and the consideration dimension—leadership behavior that expresses concern for employees by establishing a warm, friendly, supportive climate.

The student should then describe a leader in terms of the chosen theory.

Denise has an idea for a freelance technical writing business that would provide text for technical journals and websites. She can write anywhere she can connect to the Internet, which will give her flexibility to participate in her other interests. She would not need an office outside of the home because she could see clients at their place of business or talk to them via Skype or another conferencing modality. She does not want to share control of the business because she feels this would harm her creativity. There are no liabilities and very few start-up costs-she already has a computer with an Internet connection. She would like to start her freelance business tomorrow and has prepared emails to send out to potential clients and a web-site, and secured various social media sites to

promote the business. What would be the best business form for Denise's business? A. Partnership B. Limited-liability company C. Sole proprietorship D. Limited partnership
