b. Changing ostomy appliances includes good handwashing.
Empty pouch when one third to no more than half full.
Faceplate needs to be replaced as needed.
Replace if can when gastrointestinal activity is minimal (prior to feeding).
Cleanse area prior to replacing with new appliance.
May need use of stoma paste or adhesive
Instruct in monitoring skin integrity.
