Explain the “vehicle” exception to the search warrant requirement.

What will be an ideal response?

The vehicle exception to the warrant requirement allows police to conduct a search of a vehicle without a warrant under certain circumstances and with some limitations. The rationale behind vehicle searches is 3-fold. First, people have a lesser expectation of privacy in their vehicle than they do in their home. Second, vehicles are mobile (usually), and as such, there is a chance they may chance location, thus making it difficult for officers to collect evidence contained in vehicles. Third, vehicle stops pose a danger to police officers, and as such, a vehicle search may be necessary for officer safety. It should be noted that there may be limitations to the scope of a vehicle search that will be largely dependent on the nature of the interaction. Through a series of decisions, the Supreme Court of the United States has crafted rules that specify when and how a vehicle search is to be conducted.
