increase in the strength of synaptic connections in activated neural pathways followed by
brief periods of repeated stimulation. The synapses become increasingly sensitive over
time, so that a constant level of presynaptic stimulation is converted into a larger
postsynaptic output that can last hours, weeks, months, or years.
