•Build vocabulary, language, and background. These are key components of comprehension.
• Match readers and texts. Students will have difficulty comprehending if they have to deal with a lot of unknown words.
• Teach strategies explicitly.
• Build confidence. 
• Monitor progress and adjust instruction as necessary.
