What are the economic, social, and political characteristics of a country that are useful to study to develop theories to explain their circumstances? Why is it important to look at all these different variables?

What will be an ideal response?

The economic characteristics that are helpful in examining a country include traditional measures like GDP and GNI, but also include discovering in which sectors (primary, secondary, tertiary, and informal) most people work. Additionally the level of productivity in a country is severely affected by the types of institutions present and available infrastructure and other types of physical capital. The social factors include taking a close look at the health indicators like life expectancy and disease rate as well as education levels, and degree of social inclusion. Finally, the various political characteristics include what type of regime governs a country and how successfully it is able to provide public goods and services to the people. All of these factors are important because there are many varied theories that offer plausible explanations for why things are the way they are and each has a variety of evidence to show a cause and effect relationship.
