The Gigabit Ethernet folks created a standard for modular ports called a gigabit interface converter (GBIC). With many Gigabit Ethernet switches and other hardware, you can simply pull out a GBIC transceiver that supports one flavor of Gigabit Ethernet and plug in another. You can replace an RJ-45 port GBIC, for example, with an SC GBIC, and it'll work just fine. In this kind of scenario, electronically, the switch or other gigabit device is just that-Gigabit Ethernet-so the physical connections don't matter.
