How widely used are private correctional companies to operate jails?

What will be an ideal response?

• From the first private jail facility in 1984, there are now dozens of privately operated jails across the country, and privatization of jail construction or management is seen as a viable option for counties that need a new jail and do not have the funds available to build one. Just between 1993 and 1999, the number of private jails in the United States increased from seventeen to forty-seven, and capacity grew from 3,229 to 16,659 . Today there are almost 300 private correctional facilities holding approximately 100,000 inmates. Even with this increase, private jails held less than 7 percent of jail inmates.
