There are three modes of interpersonal communication cited in the text: verbal, nonverbal, and symbolic. Verbal communication refers almost totally to words and combinations of words. Meaning is derived from the person and context in which words are used. The nonverbal mode can be divided into three subgroups: paralanguage, kinesics, and proxemics. Paralanguage includes such elements as diction, and the rate and pitch at which a person is speaking. Kinesics include body gestures and body positioning. Proxemics becomes a mode of communication in the manner in which personal space is used. Symbolic communication occurs continuously at a passive level. Judgments are based on symbolic data that are seldom checked out for their validity. Symbolic communication includes messages relating to style of dress type of car driven, or jewelry. P
