Prohibition began in 1919 with the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment, prohibited the sale and purchase of "intoxicating liquors.". A hugely unpopular law, it was ignored by a large segment of society and they continued imbibing, thus fueling the black market profit from this illegal activity. As lawmakers began realizing that a ban on alcohol was not only futile but was also making mobsters rich, the law was repealed with the passage of the Twenty-First Amendment in 1933.
